It Has Been An Unusual Year

The storm we had in the last entry was the worst storm we had all winter!  Since then, it has been unusually dry.  And it seems to be getting even worse!  I was up to Index last week and the river is the lowest I have ever seen it...even at the end of summer.  It has been great to have the nice weather, but we are paying for it now.  The forests are really dry making the trees more susceptible to bug infestation...creating an even bigger problem.  The low rivers are causing havoc with the fish population.  Many fish are getting caught in small pools that are left when the rivers start shrinking, with nowhere to go.  Surprisingly, we are not on water rationing...but then again I may be speaking too early.  We are having people up over the 4th of July and it will be quite different from previous years.

It is hard to believe this is a river that has swallowed up houses.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Bob and Doug joined me for a nice weekend.  We had some great meals, spent much time around the campfire, played a long, but fun game of Mexican train, and many games of lasoo golf.  Steve was not around as he and Robert were on an amazing adventure...a week long trip floating the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.  With just the three of us, it was a very enjoyable time.  We took a couple of nice walks...one up to the old Triangle Campground and the other a leisurely walk into town.  We all returned to the city late Sunday afternoon...avoiding the traffic jam that was likely happening on Memorial Day.

In our walk around the town of Index, we passed this wonderful
display of pitcher plants in someone's yard.  I hope to see
them for sale...maybe at the Index Arts Festival.

After spending a couple of weeks in Montana, then spending another week trying to get my yard at home back in shape, I finally made it up to The Drunken Bear for a relaxful few days.  Being retired sure has its advantages!  I went up late Sunday afternoon and I passed miles and miles of cars and trucks stuck in the gridlock of Highway 2.  As I have stated before, this is such an embarrassment for the state!  A major East/West state highway that looks like a parking lot.

No traffic going my way, but look at the traffic going the opposite direction!

It was too hot and dry to have a fire.  Before it got too hot I worked out in the yard.  I finally got all of the branches cut from the tree that had fallen on the cabin.  I used a circular saw and there were a lot of branches.  Amazing how the muscles have changed with the progression of age.  Holding that saw in one hand while cutting all those branches really pulled on the arm muscles.  Of course if I used those muscles more often, it would not have been so bad.  Maybe it is time to start doing a little more exercise...ha!  Putting the branches in the wood shed gave it kind of an artistic look...in my mind anyway.

A warning to other trees - this is what will happen to you if you
fall on the cabin - chop, chop.

I also moved one of remaining piles of wood we had out front.  It sure cleaned up the area.  The pile contained a lot of the rotted pieces of the Pan Abode wood.  Those pieces got stacked and will be cut into usable lengths when there is room in the woodshed.  There is another pile of wood that consists of miscellaneous pieces of wood we have received from people who have torn down their fences, decks and so on.  As long as the wood has not been treated, we will use if for fires.  Even on this trip I had stopped by Bob and Doug's on the way up as they had torn down one of their fences and asked if we could use the wood.  This type of wood burns much faster than logs do, but it also gives some quick heat when needed.  Moving the pile made much more room for putting up tents and playing games in the yard.  It won't be long before we have a horseshoe pit.

Looking around the cabin, we have quite a few finishing jobs to do and I hope we can get a lot of them completed this summer.  Hopefully I will be coming up once a week.  It is such a joy to be up there in the woods.  We are very fortunate to have this little bit of heaven.  Thank you again Roger!  Sure wish you were here to share it with us.  R.I.P.
